Whale And Dolphin Sighting (2 Days/ 1 Night)
(South West Coast - December to April)
From Colombo, travel to Mirissa. Enroute visit the 16th century Dutch Fortress at Galle and a Turtle Hatchery. Check-in at a hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
On the second day, leave for Mirissa Harbour and commence whale watching expedition by boat. Sri Lanka may be the most reliable and the easiest place in the world for seeing Blue Whales and Sperm Whales together. December to April is the season for whale sightings and December, January and April are the peak months.
Other species that could be observed are Humpback Whales, Whale Sharks, Falls Killer Whales, Pigmy Killer Whales, Melon Headed Whales and rare Bryde's Whales. Pods of Bottlenose, Spinner, Spotted, Fraser's and Risso's Dolphins may also be seen amongst other marine life like the stingrays and turtles. Also observe sea birds such as Indian Swift Lets, Cattle Egrets, White Bellied Fish Eagles and even rare Pomarine Skuas. After a fulfilling day, return to Mirissa Harbour. After lunch proceed to Colombo or return to your hotel.
The Gathering Of Elephants At Minneriya (2 Days/ 1 Night)
(July to October)
Leave Colombo to Habarana for lunch at the hotel. By early afternoon, leave for Minneriya National Park where you can see herds of wild elephants congregate in 'The Gathering' - the grand seasonal phenomena which is one of the most awesome wildlife spectacles in the world with over 300 hundred elephants congregating around the shores of Minneriya Tank. This is an opportunity to observe the social dynamics of elephants. The season starts between July to October each year with its peak in the months of August and September.
Next, visit the park in a safari vehicle with a park ranger. This will also be a great opportunity to observe the abundance of birds and many other wildlife. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
The second day of the tour brings you to Sigiriya to climb the Rock Fortress. Sigiriya is a fascinating monument which was a stronghold of a 5th century king who murdered his father. The red stone rises 600 feet from the green scrub jungle and it is famous for its frescoes painted within a sheltered rock. Only 19 out of the 500 frescoes painted in the 5th century remains. The Lion Stairway, the Mirror Wall and the Water Gardens are amongst Sigiriya's other highlights. Lunch at Sigiriya before returning to Colombo or your hotel.
Trek To Peak Wilderness (2 Days/ 1 Night)
(December to May)
Leave Colombo for Maskeliya via Kitulgala - the filming site of the Academy Awards movie 'The Bridge Over The River Kwai'. Enjoy lunch enroute before arriving at the hotel. After dinner at the hotel, proceed to Dalhousie after midnight. Begin ascent of the 2,243-metre high holy mountain 'Adam's Peak' which has a unique distinction of being sacred to the followers of four of the world's major religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Atop the peak is an oblong platform where a small Buddhist temple stands with the shrine of the footprint believed to be imprinted by a holy figure. The main season to visit Adam's Peak is from full moon night in December to May with its peak in March. At dawn, see the glorious spectacle of sunrise before your descent to the foothill which takes about 3 hours. On your way downhill, soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding hill country. Savour breakfast upon arrival at the hotel. After a well deserved rest and lunch, proceed to Colombo or your next destination.
