Journey to Sigiriya
Embark on a day to Sigiriya for a full day to see the iconic rock face that stands tall in the forest of Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is a “World Heritage Site” and the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the Palace on the summit of the 600-foot high rock. On its summit are the foundations of the Royal Palace, Water Tanks to supply water and all other buildings and at the edges the guardhouses.
Driving from Dambulla, we make a stop at a local cashew factory to see the process of shelling and manufacturing this sweet nut.
Continuing on, we approach Sigiriya where rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka’s single most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilization, thought to be once the epic center of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa, and there are spellbinding vistas across mist-wrapped forests in the early morning.
Upon arrival proceed to climb the rock fortress to see stunning views from the summit.
