Malaysia’s Rainforest World Music Festival

Every year, deep in the lush landscapes of Sarawak, the sound of drums, flutes, and voices rise against a backdrop of ancient rainforest. This is the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Malaysia’s most iconic cultural celebration and one of the world’s most unique music gatherings. Since its beginning in 1998, it has grown into a festival that brings together artists, travelers, and local communities in an unforgettable fusion of sound and spirit.

Held at the Sarawak Cultural Village, framed by the majestic Mount Santubong, the Rainforest World Music Festival is more than a music event. It is an experience that blends world-class performances with cultural exchange and natural beauty. Visitors sit beneath towering trees, listening to traditional rhythms from indigenous musicians one moment and global fusion beats from international performers the next. The rainforest itself becomes part of the stage, with its atmosphere creating an energy that no concert hall could ever match.

The Rainforest World Music Festival returned from 20 to 22 June 2025, carrying the theme “Connections – One Earth, One Love.” This powerful message reflected how music transcends borders and encourages unity, while also reminding audiences about environmental responsibility.

Guests enjoyed a diverse line-up of over 20 acts from across the globe, with performers from Malaysia, Japan, Colombia, India, New Zealand, Siberia, and France. The spirit of Sarawak was proudly represented through local favourites including At Adau, Mathew Ngau Jau, Meruked, and Buloh Berkocak, whose indigenous sounds echoed through the village. International highlights included Otyken from Siberia, New Zealand’s Buddha Beat, and Al McKay’s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience from the USA.

A Sense of Unity

What sets RWMF apart is its commitment to culture, community, and sustainability. Since its first edition in 1998 with just a few hundred attendees, the festival has grown into one of Asia’s most iconic cultural events, now drawing thousands of visitors every year. Its eco-friendly initiatives and cultural showcases highlight not just music but also the values of respect, heritage, and environmental care.

There was something for everyone, from daylight workshops and storytelling sessions to evening open-air concerts. Festival-goers learned traditional instruments, joined cultural dances, explored artisan crafts, and enjoyed Sarawak specialties at food stalls. As night fell, the rainforest came alive with powerful live performances that turned the entire setting into a celebration of rhythm, tradition, and nature.

The Journey Continues

As we reflect on this year’s RWMF, there is already excitement for the next one. The festival’s consistency over nearly three decades shows its resilience and cultural importance. Travelers and locals alike can look forward to another gathering filled with rhythm, culture, and nature

Though the music has quieted for now, the Rainforest World Music Festival will return, and we look forward to welcoming you to the next celebration.
