Kuala Lumpur City & Hands-On Pewter Smithing

Royal Selangor has anchored Malaysia's pewter craft heritage for more than 130 years, and its Visitor Centre in Setapak is the only place outside the factory floor where guests can step into the actual pewtersmithing process rather than just watch it. The Kuala Lumpur City and Hands-On Pewter Smithing tour pairs a city sightseeing route through Kuala Lumpur's central landmarks with the Royal Selangor School of Hard Knocks workshop at the Visitor Centre.

The structure splits the day between observation and participation, moving from the city's signature architectural landmarks through the Visitor Centre's exhibits before guests sit down at the workshop benches with hammer and wooden mould in hand to shape a pewter dish that they then take home.

Highlights

  • Kuala Lumpur City Sightseeing: The tour covers Kuala Lumpur's central landmarks across the route to the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre in Setapak, giving guests a working orientation to the city's architectural and cultural anchors as part of the same outing as the workshop.
  • Royal Selangor Visitor Centre Tour: Before the workshop, guests walk through the Visitor Centre's museum, Science Discovery Gallery, and live craftsmanship showcase, where artisans (many of whom have worked Royal Selangor's benches for over 40 years) hammer pewter in real time on the production floor.
  • School of Hard Knocks Workshop: The hands-on session is conducted with a pewtersmith's traditional tools: a hammer and a wooden mould. Under instructor guidance, each guest works a flat disc of pewter into a finished dish through the same hammering and shaping techniques used on the factory floor.
  • Take-Home Pewter Dish and Certificate: The workshop ends with each guest taking home their handcrafted pewter dish, marked with their unique hammering pattern, along with a personalised certificate of completion and a Royal Selangor apron as a memento of the session.
