Serendah Indigenous Explorations

Kampung Orang Asli Serendah is a Temuan village of around 300 indigenous families in Hulu Selangor, about 45 minutes by road from Kuala Lumpur, and one of the few indigenous communities in Peninsular Malaysia hosting visitors directly on their own terms through Native Discovery's social enterprise model. The Temuan are the largest Orang Asli ethnicity in Selangor, with a hilltop village and ancestral forest landscape that maps onto centuries of community land use.

The half-day experience is led by Native Hosts (Orang Asli community partners) who guide guests through the village's ancestral forest before returning to the community kitchen for a traditional Temuan meal. The format prioritises direct contact with the community over a curated tourist presentation, making the encounter as much a dialogue as a visit.

Highlights

  • Bukit Beruang Ancestral Forest Trek: The guided hike through Bukit Beruang follows a trail known primarily to the Temuan community, with Native Hosts identifying edible forest plants, medicinal greens, and colonial-era Siamese holes buried in the ground along the route.
  • Traditional Temuan Lunch by Local Chefs: The community kitchen prepares a traditional Temuan meal using ingredients from the forest and the village, with local chefs cooking dishes that are halal-certified and Muslim-friendly, with vegetarian options available on request.
  • Indigenous Weaving with a Master Weaver: Guests can take part in an indigenous weaving session with a Temuan master weaver, working with natural leaves and fibres in a craft technique that has been transmitted through generations within the village's elder community.
  • Native Host Dialogue and Storytelling: The experience closes with informal dialogue with community leaders and elders, covering Temuan cosmology, daily life, environmental stewardship, and the broader history of Orang Asli communities in Peninsular Malaysia.
